A Bit About Salik:

Perhaps amongst the most relevant of things to mention here is that salik is an Arabic word loosely translated as "seeker" and the literal meaning of the word is "traveler".  Yet, traveler in the sense of this word indicates spiritual travel on the path of personal development and a growing relationship with God which God is pleased with.   That said, it's important for me to  mention with sincerity that I pray that I am at least one who is on that path and in that relationship.  However, while poetry has been a love of mine for many years and some people say they enjoy my work, I believe that my writing is usually a means of my sort of setting a goal to reach rather than a state which I have actually attained.

God Knows the Best and possibly the reality sort of fluctuates between both a process and an attainment.

I grew up in the suburbs of Albany, NY and over the years have lived in many different settings throughout America and experienced many different cultural realities.  My family, I believe, has a rich history that is fertile with much that I can benefit from and sublimate into a better me, family and community life.  Here I have used the word "sublimate" to subtly express that there is much pain and struggle in my family history, both personal and comprehensively within this and previous generations.

However, for the purpose of brevity as well as the wish to avoid placing myself on a pitty pot, I choose not to go into much detail here about any of that.  Also, I prefer that when you read my poems, unless you know me personally, that you not have any assumptive ideas about me or my life that leads you to an interpretation of my work that may or may not be right.  If you have any questions for me, I am more than happy to answer them via my contact information.  My life is an open book and I am happy to hear from you!

with sincerity,

~Salik Adam Atiq
